The facade of an historic building in Columbus, Ohio is temporarily transformed with light… making it appear to be “slowly breathing,” as though it's in a relaxed state of Zen-like meditation. Waves of light, rising and falling at the pace of human breath, create the visual impression of respiration. All lighting is computer-controlled, energy-efficient LED technology.

Bridging the Atlantic, a parallel installation is currently in planning for Dresden, Germany in 2013, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of Dresden and Columbus as “sister cities.” The Columbus installation — seen in these photos — opened on February 1, 2012.

Said the artist, “with its sweeping presence reflecting in the Scioto River, the illuminated facade — animated with rising and falling waves of light — faces downtown Columbus immediately across the river and becomes an artwork on the scale of the cityscape.”

Bridging the Atlantic, a parallel installation is in planning for Dresden, Germany in 2013, linking Columbus and Dresden in a shared public art experience on the occasion of their 20th anniversary as sister cities. The site in Dresden is the Kathedrale Ss. Trinitatis, which was built in 1738 and is one of Dresden's foremost landmarks.

Temporarily transformed with light, the building appears to be “slowly breathing,” as though it's in a relaxed state of Zen-like meditation. Waves of light, rising and falling at the pace of human breath, create the visual impression of respiration. All lighting is computer-controlled, energy-efficient LED technology.

Like most of the historic buildings in Dresden, it was heavily damaged in the bombing of the city in February 1945. It was restored in the mid 1980s. “Given Dresden’s nearly total destruction at the end of World War II,
I think the vision of one of its great historic buildings appearing to be breathing will be extremely moving.”
