Description
I work with mixed media; predominately handmade paper and mod roc, creating abstract work through mark making and repetition influenced by natural forms and repetitious man-made structures. I produce sculptural forms out of materials primarily considered 2D, taking interest in textures and patterns around me, observed through becoming consciously aware of the habitually unnoticed. The formal elements of the work such as multiplicity of materials enable me to both make and collapse space, increasing the visual stimuli for the viewer; creating scale and intrigue. This initially intuitive response has evolved into a conscious process which although often laborious, allows me to transform insignificant items, which could otherwise be considered bleak and understated. I am interested in the exciting tones and textures these items possess and in transcending the objects original worth, provoking contemplative work. I am drawn towards humble materials and have greatly enjoyed hand crafting paper and immersing myself mentally and physically in repetitive mark making processes. These time consuming, sometimes meditative and repetitive methods I have adopted are fundamental to my practise, but I hope the individual objects will have a presence beyond this.
